Auto industry, the prime mover of the economic growth of our country and has emerged as a sunrise sector in our economy. It not only provides mobility to masses, but also provides a means for movement of goods across the country, aimed at enhancing the national productivity. Oil Industry, on their part has been providing quality fuels for achieving these goals. India, essentially being a diesel economy, with consumption of diesel fuels more than five times that of gasoline, the endeavor of the Auto Industry has always been to provide an efficient power pack for road transport sector - the diesel engines. However public in general and environmentalists in particular have been concerned about the emissions from Diesel vehicles. Auto manufacturers have been working relentlessly on the reduction of vehicular emissions over the years. With BSIII compliant vehicles already running in the country, Auto Industry is geared up to meet the BSIV norms which will come into effect from April 2010, marking the culmination of the recommendations made by Auto Fuel Policy. Emission control devices manufacturers and Fuel system and control manufacturers have already established their bases in India and have rendered technical support for developing suitable fuel control systems after treatment devices for Euro IV compliant engines. Oil industry on their part have made massive investments in their refineries for introducing BSIV fuels, thereby enabling the adoption of advanced technologies on vehicles in order to control vehicular emissions.
The proposed workshop, which will bring together Industry experts and Policy makers, will give an opportunity to understand the preparedness of both oil and automobile industries for transition to BS IV compliance and could also lay the foundations for debate on the future regulations in this field.
