About the organizers

SAE India is a premier society that serves the mobility engineering fraternity towards the design, manufacture and service of self propelled vehicles & systems that move in air, space and on land. SAE Northern India Section (NIS) organizes Summer School in Automotive technology along with industry partners such as Maruti Suzuki India Limited, IOCL IndianOil R&D, iCAT etc to provide a platform to practicing engineers, R&D professionals and academicians to interact and broaden the scope of collaborations for development of sustainable mobility solutions. The second edition of the Summer school will be held from 11th-14th June 2019 at Indian Oil R&D centre, Faridabad. IndianOil R&D centre is a premiere research organization in the energy sector focusing on developing globally competitive products, processes and technologies. The centre has delivered pioneering technological solutions in the areas of lubricants, fuel, refining processes, pipeline transportation, petrochemicals, alternative and renewable energy sources.

Who should attend?

Faculty in Mechanical/Automobile department teaching IC Engine design/Combustion/Thermal Engineering and research scholars pursuing PhD in Automotive Technology (limited to maximum 10 research scholars). Practicing engineers/managers working in IC engine design, transmission systems, electric vehicles, fuels & lubricants, testing & certification of vehicles should attend for burgeoning their knowledge base.

Objectives

Mobility is currently dominated by a number of powerful trends. Autonomous driving, electric mobility, digital information and communication technologies have begun to fundamentally change the landscape of mobility solutions all around the world. Urbanization and de-carbonization are calling for new concepts. Beyond sustainability, competition is increasingly focusing on all-encompassing service, maximized use of drive time, digital real-time economy and deep integration within the internet of things. Under the hood, this is providing some exciting and challenging prospects for technology developers in the automotive segment. Cognitive capabilities are promising to let the robots in our cars interact with humans in a natural, intuitive way. The future of intelligent cars has just begun. Further, in order to cope with the more pertinent challenges of the immediate future with respect to the reduction of GHG (Green House Gas) emissions from the transportation sector, a plethora of innovations especially in the areas of hybrid power trains, alternative fuels, and electric mobility are being explored and debated.

It is in this background that SAE-NIS along with MSIL, IOCL R&D &ICAT are jointly organizing the Summer School In Automotive Technology to reinforce the need for continued knowledge sharing and interaction from various stakeholders in the automotive segment.

The curriculum for the summer school has a balanced combination of theoretical and applied aspects of the latest automotive trends and technologies and will include a one-day visit to an automotive industry. There will be an Objective Type (multiple choice questions) Test on the last day based on the topics covered during the program. To enable the participants to carry forward their learning beyond the program, each participant will be required to submit a mini project, within three months from the completion of the programme, detailing the application of the learnings in some aspect of their own areas of work.

Topics to be covered

  • Fuels, Alternatives, Lubricants - Session will include details of biofuels, gaseous fuels along with lubricants for improved fuel economy in automotives
  • Legislative testing - Session will include details of vehicle homologation & testing equipments
  • - Advanced powertrains & After-treatment strategies : Session will include engine management system, after-treatment strategies for meeting future emission norms, trends in transmission technology, vehicle electrification
